Interesting Facts About Acupuncture - Your Tongue

Interesting facts about acupuncture #1

Before beginning your treatment, your acupuncturist may examine your tongue and your pulses.  The characteristics of your tongue can help your practitioner diagnose your current health condition.  For example, a purplish tongue may show blood stagnation of some kind.  A coating on the tongue may mean there is a deficiency in the body.  The practitioner may also measure the strength and frequency of your pulse at the wrists.  The pulse may be felt at different locations and different levels.  A qualified practitioner will use your pulse readings to gain valuable diagnostic information.

Acupuncture Fact #2

Acupuncture is often used to manage pain.  In some countries, acupuncture is also used as surgical anesthesia.  Surgical patients in foreign hospitals sometimes opt for acupuncture instead of general anesthetics.  Sometimes a combination of sedation and acupuncture is used.

Acupuncture Fact #3

Acupuncture Fact #4

Acupuncture received attention in the United States in 1971 after President Nixon visited China.  A reporter from the New York Times, James Reston, who followed the President had emergency surgery while in a Chinese hospital and was treated with acupuncture after the surgery.  He wrote about the experience when he returned.

Acupuncture Fact #5

Although acupuncture needles used to be made of wood or bone, they are now made of stainless steel and are no thicker than a few human hairs.
