PEMF Therapy

PEMF Therapy

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF), sometimes referred to as low-field magnetic stimulation, is an increasingly popular treatment used by a growing number of practitioners including chiropractors, physical therapists, and acupuncturists. The treatment typically involves laying or sitting on a mat, similar in size but thicker than a yoga mat.  The mat contains coils that send out pulsed waves of electromagnetic energy at very low frequencies (less than 100Hz).  Its primary use is to stimulate and improve blood flow, and activate and regenerate cells.

The Research

Although PEMF mats are not approved by the FDA, and manufacturers are prohibited from promoting the mats for unapproved uses, several important studies support the idea that PEMF mats can assist with many common ailments such as depression, pain relief, stiffness, osteoarthritis, inflammation, healing, and the stimulation of bone growth.[1] [2] [3] [4]

NASA was interested in electromagnetic fields as a way to assist astronauts returning from space.  NASA researchers were searching for a way to regenerate the tissue and bones of astronauts who may have been negatively impacted by long periods without gravity.  In 2003, NASA completed a study that supports the idea that a time-varying electromagnetic field could promote tissue regeneration or repair traumatized cells.[5]
